I provide professional guiding services on Lower Lough Erne, located in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
Lough Erne has two halves, upper and lower Erne, the smaller southern lake called the upper Lough as it is higher up the river, while the bigger northern lake is called the lower Lough. The town of Enniskillen lies on the short stretch of river between the lakes.
Lower Lough Erne is renowned for it's Wild brown trout fishing from March 1st right up to 30th of September. There is some fantastic fishing to be had on this wonderful water and it is one of my biggest waters to Guide on. Erne has long rocky shallows, unique islands and it's vast waters holds some Large brown trout. Lower Erne is more than 15 miles long lower and has numerous bay and rocky outlets that make it the perfect fishing ground for wild brown trout fishing. The early season consists of pulling wets over these same rocky shore lines, or along the unique islands can provide some lively days fishing.
The Lough is also renowned for its Mayfly fishing with Mayfly usually appearing around the middle of May and continuing right into the middle of June. There is also excellent Spent fishing to be had. July on Lough Erne sees a second hatch of Mayfly and Olives, and the Lough can on occasion fish better than in May.
Later in Summer Erne sees a big hatch of Sedges and you can often see Trout rising freely to take them. If you fancy a change from all that dry fly fishing, with a change of tactics July, August and September has some great fishing in deeper water with trout feeding heavily on Daphnia and Fry.
A Game angling permit and Game rod licence is required to fish Lower Lough Erne. The fishing dates:
- For Brown Trout: 1st March to 30th September for Brown Trout
